Creative Fatigue
What is Creative Fatigue?
Creative fatigue is the steady decay in engagement and conversion that sets in as the same audience sees an ad too many times, and it is the reason sustained creative volume, not a lucky winner or two, is what keeps CAC stable.
How fatigue shows up before ROAS breaks
Fatigue is a leading-indicator problem: by the time ROAS visibly cracks, the account has usually been overpaying for weeks. Across AdBoost Health partner accounts it surfaces first in the upper funnel, in roughly this order:
- Rising CPM on a stable audience as the platform charges more to keep forcing a tired ad into the same feeds.
- Falling hook rate as viewers who have seen the opening three seconds before scroll straight past.
- Rising frequency as delivery narrows onto the people most likely to have already converted.
- Rising CAC and falling ROAS, the lagging symptoms that arrive last.
A worked example
Take a TRT campaign with round, illustrative numbers: CPM drifts from $15 to $23 while hook rate slides from 32% to 24% on an unchanged audience. That combination is a fatiguing creative, and it is a rotate-now signal weeks before the CAC column finally breaks. Waiting for the ROAS confirmation is choosing to pay the fatigue tax in full.
How to slow fatigue, not just react to it
Rotation is the cure, but structure buys you time between rotations. Broadening the audience gives the algorithm more people to reach before frequency spikes; running genuinely different angles and formats (founder story, provider explainer, before-and-after routine, UGC testimonial) fatigues each on its own clock rather than all at once; and excluding recent converters and site visitors from prospecting stops you re-serving ads to people who already acted. None of this replaces fresh creative volume, but it stretches the useful life of each winner and smooths the CAC line between refreshes.
Why it matters for health and DTC brands
Health brands fatigue on a compressed clock, because every replacement creative must also clear claims review before it can run, so the refresh pipeline has to stay ahead of the decay rather than react to it. The working standard across AdBoost Health partner accounts is 15–25 new variants per month, sized to the reality that only about 1 in 8 health creatives becomes a durable winner, so a healthy account is always testing the next cohort while the current winners are still delivering. This is why fatigue is a creative testing discipline, not a one-time fix: the goal is a pipeline, not a hero ad. The angle library matters as much as the volume, since claims-safe angles (mechanism, routine, provider credibility) can be iterated indefinitely, while a borderline claim is one rejection away from flagging the whole account. Monitor CPM and hook rate against your own trailing baseline so you catch fatigue while a rotation still fixes it cheaply.
